First Bloom – in progress

every year i see photos of cherry blossoms dot the posts and timelines of facebook and twitter, and i feel a little jaded. there just aren’t many (if any?) cherry trees blossoming here in the spring. i’ve always wanted a reason to paint them, but i really favor viewing a flower “in person”, experiencing and photographing it before putting it down on paper.
but, i’ve really been itching to paint some pretty pink cherry blossoms…

so i was really excited when i received a request on Etsy from a collector in Oklahoma to do just that. she was very complimentary and easy to work with – i started by browsing tons of photos online for color & shape inspiration. then i drew up a small color-pencil sketch to represent the general layout and color scheme (she requested some hot pinks & black background, which i LOVE). then it was off to the paper, what an awesome opportunity – i so appreciate custom orders from enthusiastic people!
